Minnesota State Fair Day Itinerary Updates!

Minnesota State Fair Day (MNSFD) will hold its fourth annual event Saturday, August 20, 2011. MNSFD is a day to bring together Midwest ex-pats and fair lovers alike to recreate the “Great Minnesota Get Together” in the streets of New York City.

Why are expats so eager to recreate the Fair? To start, the Minnesota State Fair is unlike any other in the nation. The 12-day event has been argued to be the largest state fair. True Minnesotans go to the Fair at least twice a year, and devious Minnesotans go every day once they learn the hand stamp system. Besides family and friends, it’s definitely one of the biggest aspects of Minnesotan living ex-pats miss.

In celebration of the nostalgia, the event will start at 1:00pm at Brother Jimmy’s in Union Square. Intense research has been conducted to identify any and all fair-related foods available in NYC, and the planned menu includes*:

  • Woody McHale’s – Cheese curds, Fried Twinkies & a Midwestern favorite brew
  • Brother Jimmy’s – Fried Pickles
  • Street fair  – Corn on the cob
  • A Salt & Battery – Fried Mars Bars & Fried Beets
  • Led Zeppole – Funnel cakes
  • Pommes Frites – Fries
  • Bar None – Fishbowl break at this Minnesota “Vikings Bar”
  • Fiddlesticks –  Attendee selected Minnesota music & drink specials
  • Johnny’s Bar – More refreshments and more Minnesota nicePapaya Dog – Corn dogs
  • City Tavern – Fresh baked Sweet Martha’s chocolate chip cookies

Registration at http://mnstatefairday-website.eventbrite.com costs only $7 and includes a tasting of authentic Cheese Curds, Sweet Martha’s Cookies and Milk, and a fine Midwestern draught. All are welcome to attend, no Midwestern roots or fair experience required.

Additionally, T-shirts will be on sale at the event and available online. Proceeds of T-shirt sales benefit the Minnesota State Fair Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving the fair experience as well as educational and cultural activities at The Fair.

We hope that you will join us, it promises to be a memorable event!

T-Shirts for sale to benefit the Minnesota State Fair Foundation

We each have our Fair routine. After stuffing our faces and taking a ride on the  Giant Slide, my family always made our way to the science and technology building. To others, it is watching the talent show while working on an Elephant Ear or checking out all the variety in 4-H submissions and taking a break from the heat. There is more to the Great Minnesota Get Together than gluttony and that’s where the Minnesota State Fair Foundation comes in.Year after year small changes and improvements are made but the MNSFF preserves the experience that keeps us coming back. The Minnesota State Fair Foundation exists to raise funds to support educational enrichment, history and heritage, agricultural education, environmental applications and cultural and artistic expressions but most importantly:

“a mirror of Minnesota greatness, a school for her citizens, and a place where all are welcome, entertained and experience the results of the best thought and effort in all lines of endeavor.”

Because the Minnesota State Fair is why we’re here, this year we are contributing proceeds to the Minnesota State Fair Foundation. Who knows, maybe someday there will be a Minnesota State Fair Day in NYC Foundation!

T-shirts will be on sale at the Minnesota State Fair Day event August 20, 2011 and are available online.

Minnesota State Fair Affair

We are incredibly excited to be part of the Minnesota State Fair Affair in collaboration with Minneapple in NYC and MN Culture Club. We are thrilled that US Senator from Minnesota, Al Franken, will be joining us for a fun filled fair-themed day March 20th at the Bell House.  Thank you to our Minnesotan cohorts in NYC for including us on such an exciting event. The Bell House Hosts the “MN State Fair Affair (in NYC)” in Gowanus, Brooklyn

(MN Senator Al Franken to Attend) – March 20, 2011

The Bell House in Gowanus, Brooklyn in association with Minneapple in the Big Apple, Minnesota Culture Club, and Minnesota State Fair Day in NYC are proud to announce the re-creation of the world-famous Minnesota State Fair, in New York. Misplaced Minnesotans, the Minnesota-curious, and all lovers of fun and food are warmly invited to enjoy a day of Midwestern cuisine, Minnesotan entertainers, trivia, a food-on-a-stick competition (with $100 grand prize), and schmooze with Minnesota’s honorable Senator Al Franken.

As part of The Bell House’s ongoing series of State Fairs (Colorado and Texas recently completed their festivities), the Minnesota State Fair Affair is bringing the joys and memories of The Great Minnesota Get-Together to Brooklyn, in a Sunday gathering of nostalgia and fun. The Minnesota State Fair is often regarded as one of the largest and most well attended state fairs in the country. This “re-creation” will feature Minnesota’s brother-sister comedy duo John and Molly Knefel, Radio Happy Hour host Sam Osterhout, and music by DJ Cherry Spoon (aka Anne Szustek). Fair goers will enjoy a variety of imported Minnesota beers and will be well fed by the renowned Mexicue food truck (Minnesota owned) which will be offering ‘Mid-wexican’ cuisine to complement Minnesota-owned Cake & Shake food truck’s traditional state fair treats.

The event will also feature a very special appearance by Minnesota Senator Al Franken who will be judging the food-on-a-stick competition and sharing his reflections of growing up in Minnesota and his memories of the Minnesota State Fair. Sen. Franken, a former comedy writer, author, and radio talk show host, was elected to the Senate in 2008 as a member of the DFL (Democratic-Farmer-Labor) Party from Minnesota.

The Minnesota State Fair Affair will take place from 3-7pm at The Bell House in Gowanus, Brooklyn (149 7th Street, 11215). The food-on-a-stick competition will begin at 3:30pm followed by entertainment. Admission is free. Must be +21 to drink. (More information and updates can be found at http://www.mncultureclub.com/statefairaffair. Please send an email to MinneappleNYC@gmail.com if you’d like to participate in the food-on-a-stick competition.)

Thank you for attending MNSFD 2010!

Thank you to all those who were able to participate in Minnesota State Fair Day in NYC 2010! We hope you had as much fun as we did eating and drinking in the spirit of The Fair. Your easy-going Minnesota attitudes were appreciated as we encountered fair challenges such as lines, rain, and belly-aches.

We especially would like to thank Minneapple in the Big Apple and MN Culture Club for their support. If you’re in need of more Minnesotan time, check out the Minne-apple in the Big Apple Minnesota monthly happy hour this Friday, September 3rd at Soda Bar Brooklyn!

Whether you were able to join us or not this year, we’d really appreciate your input so that we can improve our route for 2011! Please take a few minutes and fill out our survey.
